In this work, California artist Phil Paradise uses bold color and quick, linear suggestions of rope in order to enhance dynamic effect and energy in a scene of dock workers at Charleston's Watermelon Wharf. Works like this add valuable comparative interest to the study of itinerant artistic impacts brought about through the introduction of modern pictorial formulas upon the South’s close-knit and conservative circle of artists prior to World War II.
