Study in Red, II

Description

William Halsey is one of the first notable South Carolina Modernist artists. Although much of the work he created in his home town of Charleston was non-representational, he credited the city’s urban atmosphere, with its architectural angles and surfaces, as inspiration for his abstract paintings, collages, and sculptures. This work aptly demonstrates Halsey’s deliberate departure from picturesque imagery and his preference for more gestural paintings composed with high-keyed colors on canvases built up with gesso, sand, marble dust, found objects and fabric.
